Hiking sticks are the same as a walking stick except that they come up to your shoulder or chin (around 60"). The extra height is good for balancing yourself as you travel across large rocks or go downhill. The hand grip, if there is one, should be where your hand is if your elbow is bent at 90 degrees. The wrist strap should be adjusted so that your weight is transferred to the hiking stick from your wrist/forearm. Basically, your wrist/forearm supports your weight and your hand moves the hiking stick.
